TV Review: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Episode 2

The cheeky Miss Fisher (Essie Davis) is at it again.

Solving murders and charming her way through the second episode of the delightful Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Tonight’s offering is ‘Murder on the Ballarat Train’ in which Miss Fisher finds herself investigating the hanging murder of a woman despised by many, leaving the suspect pool open for a good-old sneaky snoop by our beloved self taught detective Miss Fisher. Although not as action packed and exciting as the first installment, the second episode is building on each main character’s strengths slowly.

The only disappointment is detective Jack Robinson (Nathan Page), who seems to have eaten a bag of cardboard and spends the entire hour looking like he’s withholding vomit, perhaps wishing to spew out something exciting but failing at every turn. He’s such a fine looking chap and I desperately wish to fawn over him like a crazy woman. The beautiful smile he gives at the end of the hour gives me a small hope that his character can somehow be likeable and charming. It needs to happen soon or else I may be so fickle as to roll my eyes as his hat and his trench coated self, graces the screen forever more.

There is another brief glimpse of Phryne’s younger sister Jane, played in flashbacks and leaves the storyline open and the audience wanting more.

There are so many questions about Miss Fisher that are yet to be answered. Where did she acquire such wealth? What are the circumstances of her sisters’ death? Why is she so cheeky and unladylike? And most importantly, when will she and Jack realise they are bound for true love?

If it took Miss Fisher to solve a jewel theft, a murder and save several abused orphans to get Jack to smile, it may be a while before we both have our way with a certain Detective.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is an Every Cloud Production and airs Fridays at 8.30pm on ABC1.
