TV Review: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Episode 9

In tonight’s delicious installment of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries titled ‘Queen of the Flowers’ Phryne (Essie Davis) is teaching some downtrodden young ladies maidens, proper grooming, fox trotting and etiquette for a town event where they can show off there fine skills. In modern day terms it’s possibly a ‘Daffodil Parade’. Good heavens!

Luckily for us Phryne is teaching them Judo, cracking heads and how to attack men in the street, that certainly seems more like it! Unfortunately one of the girls ‘in the family way’ is murdered, one’s a kleptomaniac and the other has been harbouring a naughty secret about an illegal dalliance with an older man.

Detective Jack (Nathan Page) is very uncomfortable around teenage girls and asks Phyrne (who he’s now calling by first name!) to consult on the case. So-called ‘orphan’ Jane’s mother ( Danielle Cormack) returns unexpectedly to take Jane home with her but we soon find out that she is sadly unable to provide her care in a crushing short scene that had me teary eyed.

There’s no romantic action tonight for the frisky Fishy fans either, the closest Detective Jack and Phryne get is a short walk with her arm in his, plus, Jack’s gone backwards wearing that ridiculous wide brimmed hat again and hasn’t maintained his one-layer-less look much to Fishy fans disgust. It’s always one step forward, two steps back with you isn’t it Jack?

Sweetie-pie Dot (Ashleigh Cummings) and her sweetheart Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt) are a cute little couple tonight with Dot helping the investigation and her man as usual.  I feel better in my heart now they are together. Admit it, we all do. Now, all that needs to happen is to find out who killed Phryne’s sister Jane, learn how she got rich and sophisticated and for Jack to keep moving forward until he has only one layer left. A sexy white singlet and some hottie matching braces will be fine thankyou.

There’s only four episodes left in this awesome series, how will they be able to fulfill all my dreams…..I mean, answer the important narrative constructs they’ve created? Only time will tell!

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is an Every Cloud Production and airs Fridays at 8.30pm on ABC1. Click here to read more episode reviews in the series

  • Errrr!!! Jack! What are you doing?? At least he is comfortable letting Phrynie put her arm into his and he is calling her Phryne (hopefully still “Miss Fisher” when he is irate with her!)

We have seen every other male shirtless on this show (other than Hugh) so what is the go with Jack? I really hope it will be worth the effort when or if they do it, because all these eps and all we see is him wearing suits, coats and hats! Errrr!!!!!!! I want more! I hope the actor, Nathan Page, does not have a “no shirtless” clause in his contract! That would be a shame!

  • Hi Kate-Ida
I’ve read and written more reviews than I’d like to say in my lifetime…possibly about three. But of those three, yours has been the funniest, most helpful and insightful that I have had the pleasure of reading.

You now have me hooked on Fishy…

…now if only Jack could take his shirt off, blast it!
