Yesterday morning saw the arrival of the highly anticipated trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. Coming to cinemas in January next year, the film – shot in 3D – stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher.
It goes without saying that visually the film looks stunningly lush with Catherine Martin’s costumes and art direction looking magnificent. Musically, it is unclear whether a modern soundtrack or an original score will back the film. Will this be another Romeo + Juliet, or not?
Unfortunately, we only get to catch a brief glance at Isla Fisher in the more interesting role of Myrtle, withCarey Mulligan’s typecasting as a whimpering, forlorn love interest taking centre stage.
It’s probably safe to say that if you’re not a Baz Luhrmann fan, then nothing’s going to change soon. For Luhrmann fans, well, nothing is set in stone. Appearing to be visually engaging, the adaptation of Fitzgerald’s story is something that we’ll have to wait and see.
The Great Gatsby will be in Australian cinemas from January 10, 2013 through Roadshow Films.
