A look back at some of the best pirate movies ever made

Thanks to the emergence of movies like the 2003 release of Pirates of the Caribbean and the sequels which followed it, people have become more enamoured at the idea of living like a pirate and exploring the ways in which they lived out at sea. Of course, it isn’t as fun and entertaining as the movies tend to make out, but it certainly looks like adventures were had.

Over the years, these types of movies have captivated audiences and have generally registered big success. Movies like Pirates of the Caribbean broke records and deserve the plaudits they receive, although they aren’t the only pirate-related option out there. In fact, it’s a genre that has been on the receiving end of numerous masterpieces over the years, be it through Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island adventure novel, pirate-themed slot games at casino.com, or even classic sea shanty songs which still live on today. The best of all, though, particularly for fans of film, has to be the selection of pirate movies we’ve been exposed to. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some memorable pirate-themed releases.

The Goonies

A traditional pirate movie from 1985, The Goonies is a classic comedy that features everything you’d expect from pirate life. Treasure hunts are carried out, pirate ships are regularly frequented, and there’s even the option of witnessing a walk down the plank. The story surrounds five friends who refer to themselves as “the Goonies” as they’re forced to find ways in which they can save their community from being dismantled by a property developer. In the search for a solution, they stumble across a plan to locate “One-Eyed” Willy’s hidden treasure.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

The aforementioned Pirates of the Caribbean is impossible to ignore, although the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is perhaps the best of the lot. A modern-day phenomenon, the series of films follow the story of Captain Jack Sparrow and everything surrounding him. This particular version of the movie focuses on Elizabeth and Will as they are caught up in breaking an ancient curse. Known for its action sequences and truly memorable cinematography, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is epic.

Captain Phillips

A movie which was based on fairly recent events, Captain Phillips is a biological thriller which is based on the story of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, which took place off the coast of Somalia and involved four pirates seizing control of the ship and taking Captain Phillips and his crew hostage. It’s certainly a tough watch and paints a rather dark view of pirate life and how they went about their business, but it’s entirely accurate and provides a real glimpse at the horrors the captain and his friends experienced. As usual, Tom Hanks is excellent in it too.

Hook

Slightly older readers among us might have grown up with this children’s classic, which starred the legendary Robin Williams in what is one of Steven Spielberg’s most memorable creations. Offering a fresh and slightly different take on the classic tale of Peter Pan, Hook is a must-watch movie that registered big success in 1991 when it was initially released. After a successful city lawyer revisits his childhood in Neverland after his children are taken there, a whole host of adventures unfold. Hook is aimed at younger audiences but it’s still a great watch.

Other memorable pirate movies include The Black Swan, Captain Blood, Pirates, The Buccaneer, Treasure Island, The Sea Hawk, and The Crimson Pirate.
