TV Recap: Rake, S03E04

rake s03e04Cleave (Richard Roxburgh) is back in the courtroom and for once he as actually representing two old guys who are innocent!  With a little help from Mal’s sister, who lies on the stand (these guys are friends of our dearly departed Malcolm) Cleaver gets them off.  His courtroom antics are almost unbearable to watch as he puts on an ‘old person’ act to win the jury over.  It’s terrible and so hilarious.

Meanwhile, after Cleave’s fight with Roger (Martin Sacks) last week over ex-wife Wendy (Caroline Brazier) he is calling her practice calling himself ‘James Mason’ to get an appointment with her just so he can try and fix the mess he created.  Of course, Wendy won’t have a bar of it.

Cleave’s not only fighting with his beloved Wendy but now he has started a name calling war with Missy (Adrienne Pickering) she is now classified as, ‘A morbidly obese Kim Kardashian in the literary sense’.  Cleave is pissed about Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of him and he’s pissed that Missy has now become a successful author and he is still, well, he’s still Cleaver Greene.  The restaurant he has invested $150k in is rarely open and when it is, there’s no one in there.  Perhaps it’s their menu.  ‘ Oven cooked, slow roasted Italian tomatoes blended to create a not too thick consistency…’  and it goes on. The food is so descriptive one can barely understand what they are getting on the plate!

It doesn’t seem that Cleave’s luck with money will be changing any time soon.

His love life, however, might just be a little bit of a mixed bag, with Missy turning up on his door after their argument and jumping his bones unexpectedly.  Afterwards Cleave seems somewhat contemplative.  What on earth is going to happen next?

At least he has his house back and the burden of Nicole (Kate Box) and her mother has now been shifted to poor Barney (Russell Dykstra), who is living in a house with his wife, the girl he cheated with, her mother and their illegitimate child.  Oh, and he’s still battling cancer. Poor Barnyard can’t cop a break either.  Cleaver’s luck must be rubbing off on him.  That’s never a good thing.

Rake airs on ABC1, 8.30pm Sunday night
