TV Review: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Episode 4

Another toe tapping, gun-toting and wildly entertaining episode of the delicious Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

Tonight’s offering involves a murder, a missing girl and poor naïve Dot (Ashleigh Cummings) mistakenly being kidnapped, all ending in a bank robbery shoot out that shows us what mild mannered Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt) is really made of (we love him all the more for it)

Detective Jack (Nathan Page) is as disgustingly serious as ever and shows no signs of ripping off his trench coat in a mad fit of passion any time soon.  Disappointing!

Aunt Prudence (Miriam Margolyes) makes another witty appearance describing the cheeky new addition to the Fisher househould, Jane (Ruby Rees-Wemyss), as ‘flippant, conniving and uncouth!’.

Miss Fisher’s (Essie Davis) backstory is briefly shown in flashbacks as we learn that she was a nurse during the war, which in no way explains her great wealth but gives us an insight into her character as we finally see a sadness in her for the first time.

But what about her sister’s death? What about Collins and Dot’s impending romance? When will we find out Miss Fisher’s real story?  And most importantly, when will Jack take off that ridiculous wide brimmed hat so we can enjoy his neat side part?

Detective Jack can try to be a hard-ass as much as he likes, trying his best to push Miss Fisher out of any criminal investigations that take place but we all know that he secretly wants a piece of her, even if his face and his complete lack of humour say otherwise.

It’s also a pity that the talented Travis McMahon has such a small role in this series, he is so good and yet wasted as a bit-part role and deserves more screen time.

We hope that as the series progresses we learn much more about Miss Fisher and her past and in doing so the audience can connect more with her.

As for Detective Jack?

Let’s hope he breaks out of his misery mould and then we can love him the way I think we’re supposed to already. Clothes may make the man but dearest Jack, you’re never fully dressed without a smile!

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is an Every Cloud Production and airs Fridays at 8.30pm on ABC1.
