It is that exciting time of the year again when Melbourne’s iconic grand dame of cinema, The Astor, releases it’s new season calendar of film.
You can expect another slew of eclectic films with a great mix of films that proved popular through the recent seasons. Such hits as Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and The Sound of Music (1965) will be returning to the big screen. Both have been completely remastered (for the umpteenth time) and have never looked better. Truly. Classic musicals such as Oliver (1968) and Singin’ In The Rain (1952) will also feature.
Joining the classics will be Casablanca (1942), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and many more. According to the Astor, there is a great demand for trilogies and marathons. So this year there will be a Wes Anderson collection, including The Royal Tenebaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). And for the most loyal of fan, the complete Lord of the Rings trilogy will be shown back to back. It will be the extended versions, spanning over 13 long hours.
For James Bond fans, it is very exciting that On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) will be shown in the attendance of special guest, George Lazenby.
Halloween will also feature a range of classic horror and suspense thrillers but more on this will be released with the calendar, which can be expected to be available in the upcoming weeks of August.
If you haven’t visited the Astor before, it is a real treat to see so many classics, new releases and, sometimes, ‘cinema fiascos’ on the giant screen in all their spectacular film glory.
